Playability: 4
Very fun scenario. You get to send masses of men against the German trenches, then shoot the Germans until you die and by then you have another wave incoming. I took a mark off because of lag. Because of the sheer amount of objects (GAIA and player) on the map, and the sheer amount of fighting going on, the game slows down, especially when a new wave is spawning.
Balance: 5
Balance is more or less perfect. You are the Americans, which may not seem like much now, but it means a lot in the scenario. The doughboy's charge ability was invaluable not only in rushing past shells before they landed but massed charged doughboys can do quite a bit of damage to the German defense.
Creativity: 5
This is one of the very few World War 1 scenarios made for Empires, which gives it points right there. Not only does BM manage to make it as fun as Crossing the Volga (which this is more or less based off of), but he adds more to the idea, not only with the trappings of WW1 but also a German counterattack.
Map Design: 5
Simply beautiful. No man's land is stunning, the trenches are very well done and I noticed that little tomb up by the German trenches too. In no man's land, your troops will rush around barbed wire, through waist high grass and skip past exploding shells on your command. It all falls together to give it a real WW1 feel to it.
Story/Instructions: 5
With a back story that gives some insight on why this battle is being fought, and with the Tank Support description more or less actually correct, the experience is more full, for lack of a better word, more rewarding. Also, now you do indeed get both tanks, which proved very useful.
Additional Comments:
- On the lag, perhaps slightly staggering the spawning times will help.
- For the last cinematic, 'bout the prisoners, more can be done with that.
- Check your triggers, the counterattack dialogue (the "OMG!! They're counterattacking!!!" and "whee! we got 4 battalion!" both got played twice even though I didn't get any reinforcements the second time)
- I assume the American general is the General Patton who isn't renamed
'Captain'? Maybe renaming HIM would help too, and also maybe only give the player the objective to keep him alive once you actaully have him, y'know?
Otherwise, damn good![Edited on 08/20/04 @ 02:00 AM]

The playability for this campaign was above average; you play as the Americans in World War I and have to push back the German lines, after which you are being counter-attacked. The gameplay was a bit repetitive, and the fact that the warfare here portrayed did not really give the feeling of trench warfare, with no obvious advantages emerging from heading in trenches or foxholes, was a bit disappointing. Giving bonuses to units in trenches or foxholes would definately make the scenario more fun and realistic.
Edit: Apparently once defending you do get a bonus, though I did not notice this myself :p It would've been better to have made it so this bonus occurred in every trench your troops happened to be in, but this is enough to give it a 5.
Balance: 4
Balance was not spot on. The opening was too easy, with constant reinforcements allowing you to constantly pressure the Germans and your tanks being virtually indestructable and able to take on entire German armies on their own without problem; yet the counterattacks by the Germans were too powerful, having already lost my tanks, especially as suddenly reinforcements stop after you take the trench. This is a serious balancing flaw, because the player could have just sent in his cheap infantry in for ages to take down the German trenches, seeing as there is no time limit for doing so. Then when the Germans counterattacked, simply take command of the tanks and use them to fight off the attacking waves with ease. I suggest either giving the player a time limit for capturing the enemy trenches, and toning down the German counter-attacks, or only allowing the player to take control of the tanks later in the game (perhaps once the first German trench has been cleared?).

The triggering was well done, and this is the first World War I campaign out there of note, but it was still a bit disappointing in conveying the trench feeling, so to say (see Playability analysis). The same concept as used in many other maps out there (such as Crossing the Volga) was taken, where you take command of a group of soldiers and have to constantly batter your cheap troops onto superior enemy positions to force him into submission. However, it does not add anything new to the genre, which is in my opinion necessary to giving this a 5. (And I don't mean a new trick or anything, but add something that would give your forces a boost fighting from a trench, too).
Map Design: 4
The no-man's land looked nice, but the area behind your trenches looked dreadfully empty and dull and prevented me from enjoying the map to the full. If this area had been invisible/inaccessible, it would not have been a point, but part of your reinforcements are created there, which draws unwanted attention to this area. I suggest either touching up this part, or making it invisible (the first option being the best, of course).
Story/Instructions: 4
The instructions were clear but also filled with spelling and grammar errors. For someone who is a native speaker I consider this a serious error, and it definitely takes away part of the shine of your scenario. It's only 5 minutes of work, especially with the easy to use export-import of texts in Empires, you should have taken the time to fix the errors. Fix this and you will get a 5 here.
Additional Comments:
A campaign with a good setting, it sadly fails to set an example on how to make trench war scenarios. It is fun to play once, though, and could become a lot better if parts of it were to be revised and improved, as stated in the above categories. I am looking forward this happening, in which case I will gladly re-review. Oh, and the music is excellent.[Edited on 08/27/04 @ 05:29 AM]

Playability: 4
The game had no lagg whatsoever and played smooth throughout. However as mentioned the game does get a bit repetitive.
Balance: 3
German mortars and Artillery raped half my doughboys even before I could make it halfway up the hill and this is with charge on. Possibly tone down mortar attack or damage. British tank had decent attack but HP was useless against mortars and German Machine guns. F17 tank had much better HP but you said it had a machine gun attaced to it but it didn't seem to do any damage at all to enemy. Maybe I need to use better tactics.
Creativity: 4
Game was pretty creative and as mentioned there is not a whole lot of ww1 scenarios that have been made. This one looks and plays well. Liked the effect of the f17 machine gun, nicely done. :)
Map Design: 5
The design of the map was very well done with lots of eye candy and mixed terrain on the climb up the hill. Unfortunately for me I was unable to see any more because I lost both times I played. However what I did see looked very good!!
Story/Instructions: 5
Objectives were clear and presentable with good story line.
Additional Comments:
Opening cinematic was hilarious with Henry taking a fall in the beginning of the doughboy charge. Also the German commander in the trench was also comical.
