Epochs

Empires: Dawn of the Modern World spans five ages. Wage war from the Middle Ages to World War II with unique units for every age and every civilization.

Middle Ages (950 AD - 1300 AD)

The beginning of the Middle Ages is marked by the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the end is marked by the Renaissance, which started in 1500 AD, giving the "Middle" Ages its name. The Dark Ages in the beginning were very harsh and there was even a huge culture change with the Germanic culture replacing the old Roman culture. For almost 500 years Europe suffered with invasions. By the year 1000 AD, Europe was establishing kingdoms and created a new medieval civilization that was much more advanced than the Roman civilization that fell long ago.

Gunpowder (1300 AD - 1600 AD)

"Renaissance," French for "rebirth," perfectly describes the intellectual and economic changes that occurred in Europe from the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries.

During the era known by this name, Europe emerged from the economic stagnation of the Middle Ages and experienced a time of financial growth. Also, and perhaps most importantly, the Renaissance was an age in which artistic, social, scientific, and political thought became less seldom. It was the end of the Middle Ages.

Imperial (1600 AD - 1900 AD)

In early 1606, King James the first granted a charter to a group of London entrepreneurs, The Virginia Company, to establish a satellite English settlement in the Chesapeake region of North America. Late that year, already 108 settlers sailed from London to and were told to settle Virginia.

The next year, On May 14th, 1607, the Virginia Company explorers landed on Jamestown Island, to establish the Virginia English colony. Almost immediately after landing, the colonists were under attack from what amounted to be an attack from the Algonquian natives. The attacks would go on and off, giving little time to settle. Problems like this would go on for years.

In Europe, the Imperial Age was when many of the European Powers (England, Spain, etc.) were taking control of the new lands and colonizing them. This age also had many advancements in weaponry. Iron and bronze started to become more popular in the battlefield, as well as gunpowder. Soon the archery and hand-to-hand methods of fighting vanished and were replaced with guns and cannons, eventually eliminating of the use of obsolete Medieval weapons in battle completely. Major changes were also taking place in science. Some examples are the invention of calculus with which Sir Isaac Newton was able to describe the laws of motion which are still used today, and Galileo using the newly invented Telescope to show evidence that the Earth was not the center of the universe.

World War I (1914 AD - 1935 AD)

World War I was a conflict that began as a war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia on July 28, 1914 AD. Soon this spread across Europe to become a global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918. Many new types of weaponry and war machines were introduced during this time such as poison gases, the popularization of Tanks used in warfare, and the introduction of the German U-boats.

World War II (1935 AD - 1945 AD)

World War II started with the Germany's blitzkrieg, also known as lightning war, on Europe. Many countries fought in this huge war, including Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Axis was defeated on 1945. Many improvements were made over the weapons used in WW1 and even more new weapons were made, such as the creation of the Atomic Bomb and the wide usage of the powerful military Tanks.
