Is it possible to set up a trigger so that when a condition is met, a certain area becomes visible to a player (visible=explored or LOS)?

Of course. Make an effect for the visibility and set up a condition (EXISTS, NOT EXISTS) depending on when do you want it to happen. If you aren't using an Object for the condition then use the Conditions tab to set it.
