I've been thinking of ways to somehow improve the design community here and improve/accelerate the learning and help for new and old designers. As of right now, they are simply still thoughts in my head and a few emails across the net.

In complete honesty, doing these type of services are nearly pointless unless some feedback and help come back. It's like beta testing a scenario for hours and then the scenario never goes to public, and designer disappears. So I'm asking all designers and potential designers to help out here, and give me a good gauge for future services/ideas.


A recent designer suggested we make a FAQ, so here we go. We need questions first, lots of them. I don't want answers to them, simply questions right now. I don't care how hard or easy they may seem, even impossible questions are good since someone shall ask them again one day. Don't even bother looking at the current list and what others posted, just post any designer/downloads/beta testing/etc questions you can think of. I'll update this post regularly with the new Qs. I'll fiqure out which ones were already posted and what not. I'll start us off:


The Questions

  • Where are the resources?
  • Where are the animals?
  • How do I build a count-down timer?
  • How do I make a timer?
  • How do I make my scenario into a campaign?
  • How do I play my own music?
  • How do I play sounds?
  • What type of sounds can I play?
  • How do I make a multiplayer scenario?
  • How do graphic effects work?
  • How do I make a cutscene?
  • Where are those cool looking bushes, fountains, crates, and everything else in the Empires-included campaigns?
  • Is there anyway for me to look at another person's scenario? At the SSS scenarios?
  • Where is the snow (ha)?
  • How do I get my US Barracks to make Korean Units?
  • How do I change a unit's name?
  • How do I give it a different history?
  • How do you put movies as the campaign background?
  • How do you make a random map?
  • How do you put the glow effect on units?
  • How do I turn off a looping trigger?
  • How do I animate characters/units like they did in the Patton Campaign?
  • How can I make day/night cycles with the environments?
  • How come my multiplayer scenario keeps going OOS?
  • How do I give my player full LOS? Limited LOS? Only player's LOS, no allies?

    I've seen these a lot (in different Empires Forum) following questions. Which two (or three) seem very obvious.

    • How do you put movies as a campaign background?
    • How do you make random maps?
    • How do you get those glowy stuff on Heroes?

    I think I wet myself...

    1. Can you turn off a looping trigger with a trigger effect?

    2. How to animate characters during a cinematic ex: talking, gesturing etc...?

    3. When using the environment effect how do you create effective day/night cycles? Was much easier in EE

    * How come some of my effects don't fire correctly?

    Use to explain for effects that use create/owner/replace that need delays when used on same objects, & trigger rot.

    * What are some of the limitations of graphic effects?

    * What are some of the things that can make a game crash?

    * What are some of the things I should remember when making a multiplayer scenario?

    This question should mention some of the anomolies that happen in a multiplayer game, espeicially that most player triggers don't function if the player is defeated. And some of the limitaions of an MP.

    how do i make it so when a hero dies i lose?

    1. Go to the object tab
    2. Select "new" and select the hero on the map.
    3. go to the effects tab, make a effect for "player" it says in there somewhere somthing about player loseing, select that
    4. Go to the triggure tab and in the lower left hand corner theres a box like the one on the right, those are your conditions, select in that box from the scroll down tab the hero you selected in the object tab. Then click on that little thing next to the condition that says "Not" This means the triggure will fire when that onject does "Not" exist.

    how do i change the cost of units
    can you change the number of men dropped from a transport plane, or the number of men a apc can carry?

    How could i make a map with everything simetrical for X amount of players?
    How do i rotate the Object i am placing?

    I am not sure if any one asked but I am too lazy to check:

    How do I get units other than tommys to drop out of a Dakota with out a delay?

    How can I get bodies to stay?

    I remember reading somewhere that the triggers can be exported for editing in a word processor.

    Does anyone know the procedure for exporting and importing the scenario triggers? I have two files in the Empires DOTMW folder that were somehow generated and I suspect they are related to this in someway.

    I can give you several examples of OOS errors.
    These are only my findings and It's possible that I could be wrong:

    Stagger your unit creation, don't create too many troops in one call. If you need to create 100 troops, create ten at a time with a small delays separating each placement.

    It appears scripting the camera to any other player than player one causes an instant OOS error. However, all humans
    seems to work.

    Forget about cinematic mode in multiplayer another instant OOS error.

    I believe Multiplayer can work if you take the time to write your own AI routines, should you choose to include a computer player. I've had hundreds of troops active at one time with no OOS problems. A multiplayer co-op scenario is a real possibility.

    It seems that the default multiplayer scenarios don't abide by these rules and thus the dreaded OOS error. A darn shame.

    my main objective is to know how to make a multiplayer scenario (2 humans against 1 or 2 computers)

    I've created a map, and that seems fine, My opponent is Germany(computer).

    When i test the map, all that germany seems to do is gather wood and build buildings, but does not evolve, does not create units. the difficulty is set as commander.

    now im using scenario editor, is this way only for 2 humans to play? or can i add a computer, and or do I have to configure all the triggers and basically tell the computer opponent what its going to do, how its going to nuild?

    maybe i have some settings wrong, but im not sure..

    Have you got all of the cpu activities checked? If yes then perhaps change the game mode to skirmish (you want the AI to work like in a regular skirmish game right?).

    I don't know whats that problem but perhaps that will help.

    BTW this thread hadn't been active for 5 years

    EDIT: Oh and the scenario editor is not the only way for 2 humans to play. You can just create a regular LAN or internet game.
