Lol Easy... For some reason this thread is familiar to me...

It might have something to do with the terrible support from Activision, or SSSi disolving, or maybe gamers have just moved on from a game that no longer updates, but that goes back to Activition.

I agree, this is one of the best games out there still. Problem is newer and faster games have come out since the release of Empires. Keep in mind this game is almost 4 years old! I play once in a while, but review recorded games sent to me or uploaded on HG a lot more. I would love to play this game more than I do, but time restraints prohibit that.
Get these dam Imp noobs out of my Game!

Empires: DMW added a ton of new features for its time. Just to think, I remember getting it and being so extremely EXCITED to use the 3D camera... that camera no longer means anything.
But I do think RTS games are failing badly, because they try to add too much- too many features, best possible graphics, etc.
The truth is, the fun of the game is never the result of amazing graphics... Empires had good graphics, but the reason it is fun is because of the excellent, quick paced action packed replayable gameplay that makes multiplayer much more fun than on other games- same reason as games such as Starcraft.

That is the argument that so many (Sony) fanboys refuse to accept, and as such the hoi polloi demand graphics, but not content. Hell, I'll bet someday in the future, a console (PS5) will just have the most beautiful renders of shapes for its games.

Wh do I always seem to be too late? I just recently discovered this game and it's already dying. That's a shame, because Empires is truly one of the best RTS games made, with all the good features of Empire Earth but without the stupid ones of Empire Earth II. (I enjoy taking good screen caps of dramatic battle situatons or magnificent landscapes.) Surely there must be active players out there somewhere?
One problem for people like me who enjoy days-long, megalomaniac struggles over the control of giant-sized maps of Middle-Earth etc. is, that advancing from one age to another is "too easy". It should take more resources. Now you barely have a time to construct an army that responds to the new epoch's requirements until it's already almost obsolete when the epoch changes once again.

We're here. There are still active players. Check online
As to advancing through the epochs and so forth, the two game variants greatly affect all of this: Action mode is quick paced and the matches are short. Empire Builder is longer and the ages/technologies cost a lot more, and at the same time resources take longer to collect while there are more of them.
Come online and check out what's usually played. Action is much more popular than Empire Builder.
